Advice for Drivers – Overtaking cyclists

overtaking present participle of o·ver·take (Verb)

Definition:- To catch up with and pass while traveling in the same direction.

Drivers, please note the above definition when overtaking cyclists. To catch up with is basic. You as a driver will probably catch up with many cyclists as quite obviously, you will be the faster of the two. If you then want to overtake, you have to pass that cyclist. In other words, you drive so far ahead of them that you overtake them. IT DOES NOT SAY To catch up with and drive alongside them at the same speed, feeding them the curb for good measure.

This bit of advice is aimed at the driver of the white van with a pig-ugly wife, near the junction of the B2192 and the A26 in Lewes, East Sussex, just after 11am on Thursday 5th May 2011.
